South Dakota Massage Therapy Continuing Education Requirements:

Licensed massage therapists must complete at least 8 hours of continuing education (CE) every two years (biennially) for license renewal.

CE must have a clear purpose and objective that maintains, improves, or expands skills and knowledge relevant to massage therapy of the human body.

Qualifying CE must either meet the definition of massage therapy or be presented by an approved provider, such as:

  • National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (NCBTMB)
  • American Medical Massage Association (AMMA)
  • Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB)

College courses may count toward CE, with the conversion: 1 semester credit = 15 CE hours, 1 quarter credit = 10 CE hours. Courses cannot duplicate those used for initial licensure.

CPR certification (AHA, Red Cross, or equivalent) may count for up to 4 hours per CE cycle.

In-person attendance at a board meeting may count for up to 2 hours per CE cycle.

All 8 hours may be obtained electronically (online or other electronic means).

CE must be completed within the current continuing education cycle (October 1, 2024 – September 30, 2026, for the next renewal).

CE is prorated based on initial licensure: if licensed before October 1, 2024, 8 hours are required; if licensed after, required hours are prorated.
