New York Massage Therapy Continuing Education Requirements:
Effective January 1, 2012, 36 hours of acceptable continuing education is required in each three-year renewal period. All 36 hours may be taken on-line through an approved sponsor. PLEASE NOTE: A policy that some may find confusing is that "self-study" hours are limited to 12 of the 36 required hours. "Self-study" hours are NOT courses that you study through an appoved provider, such as Institute of Somatic Therapy. For more information, refer to the New York State Massage Therapy Board website link found here. Question 17 (as of June 12, 2018) specifies that all 36 hours may be done online. It reads as follows: "17. Can I take all my courses on-line? Yes. There isn't any limit to how many courses you may take on-line through an approved sponsor." We also recommend that you read question 18 regarding types of courses that are not accepted. Some that they list as Reiki, Feldenkrais, or courses designed to teach you how to maximize profits as a massage therapist. Please note that the following courses are not valid for your CE requirement in New York: Prevention of Medical Errors, Spa Therapy, and Infant Massage.
