Canada Massage Therapy Requirements

Canada does not have a national massage therapy board. Each province has individual rules and regulations regarding the practice of massage therapy. PLEASE NOTE: We provide the below information about your province as a courtesy but cannot guarantee its accuracy because laws are continually subject to change. If you have questions about the information we have provided below, please contact your licensing agency directly. Your governing board will hold you ultimately responsible for knowing the laws that apply to you. We do not deviate from our posted return and exchange policy if you later determine that a course you enrolled in is not valid for CEs in your jurisdiction.

For Canada massage therapists who also have a license to practice in the United States, please refer to our state laws page for details on US course approvals. Institute of Somatic Therapy is approved by the NCBTMB as a continuing education approved provider (#280672).

Alberta Massage Therapy Continuing Education Information:

Alberta does not have provincial government massage therapy regulation; instead, massage therapists typically join one or more professional associations to support their practice, insurance needs, and continuing education requirements. Each association has its own continuing education or professional development criteria, which may include required hours, subject requirements, and acceptable formats (online, in‑person).

As a courtesy, we list some of the common associations in Alberta. Members should confirm CE requirements directly with their association before enrolling in any courses:

  • Natural Health Practitioners of Canada (NHPC)
  • Remedial Massage Therapists Association (RMTA)
  • Massage Therapist Association of Alberta (MTAA)
  • Certified Registered Massage Therapist Association (CRMTA)
  • Other local or specialty associations that set their own CE expectations

Each association determines whether online continuing education courses are acceptable and what content fulfills their criteria. It is the responsibility of each member to verify course acceptability with their own association or insurer before using a course to meet CE requirements.

Institute of Somatic Therapy is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage & Bodywork (#280672), and our online courses may be used for professional development or for continuing education requirements with associations that accept NCBTMB‑approved courses, provided the association confirms course acceptance.
