Course Description

This fully online cognitive massage therapy course covers the anatomy and causes of sciatic pain, functional testing for piriformis syndrome, and treatment options for the massage therapist as well as self-treatment strategies for clients. You will learn to distinguish between true sciatica and false sciatica (also known as piriformis syndrome).

The course teaches concepts related to functional testing to determine whether piriformis syndrome is the cause of sciatic pain, and how to address your client's pain using:

• Heat therapy
• Stretching
• Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (post-isometric relaxation and reciprocal inhibition)
• Deep tissue massage
• Static compression

You will also learn self-treatment techniques that you can teach directly to your clients.

Because this is a cognitive (not kinesthetic) course, it is not designed to teach how to perform neuromuscular facilitation or deep tissue massage from scratch. Rather, it directs you in how to apply techniques you would have already learned during your initial or continuing massage education.
