About This Module
This module addresses the first two sections of the textbook (Chapters 1–5), covering an overview of the theories and the entire spine.
Please note: We also offer a second module covering the remaining chapters, which address the extremities. If you have already purchased the textbook, please use the "test only" option to earn those credits without purchasing another copy.
Course Description
Taber's Medical Dictionary defines "orthopedic" as "concerning the prevention or correction of musculoskeletal deformities." When you have completed this home-study continuing education course, you will have a new level of understanding that will transform your practice of massage therapy.
You begin with an intensive anatomy refresher covering bones, muscles, and nerves, then move into common dysfunctions and their causes, symptoms, signs, and treatments. From there, you will explore detailed assessment procedures visual, motion, and palpation for the following spinal regions:
- Lumbar spine
- Thoracic spine
- Cervical spine
Finally, you will learn neuromuscular muscle energy techniques and orthopedic massage techniques to address the dysfunctions your clients may present.

Massage and Manual Therapy for Orthopedic Conditions by Thomas Hendrickson, DC introduces massage techniques for orthopedic conditions, promoting the alignment of soft tissue as it relates to pain and dysfunction. An essential manual for clinical massage therapy, it contains descriptions of the rationale behind orthopedic massage, mechanisms of injury to and repair of soft tissue, and anatomy of each body area. The Second Edition also includes detailed assessment for each body region, discusses common lesions, and provides illustrated instructions on how to administer this scientifically based style of massage. Coverage includes range of motion, passive and isometric testing, and tests that determine the severity of a condition or injury.

Can I print the online test to work on it at my convenience?
Students who enroll in this course will receive a study guide consisting of the exam questions. You can work on it at your convenience, and then go online to fill in your answers when ready.
What happens if I fail the test? Do I have to pay again?
No. If you fail the test, you may continue to retest until you pass at no additional charge. The test will be different each time you take it. You can print out your test results to use as a study reference before retesting.
What is the difference between cognitive and kinesthetic courses?
Cognitive courses teach concepts related to massage therapy but do not teach specific hands-on techniques. Courses such as ethics, pathology, anatomy, and research are classified as cognitive. Kinesthetic courses teach specific hands-on techniques that you can use on clients during a massage therapy session. Some states limit how many kinesthetic courses can be completed in an online or home-study setting. Refer to our State Guidelines page for specifics about your state.
