Course Overview
Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery involving the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion for labor or commercial sex. Illicit massage businesses have been identified as one of the most common commercial fronts for this crime. According to the Polaris Project, there are an estimated 7,500 to 9,000 illicit massage businesses currently operating in the United States, many of which are connected to human trafficking operations.
This course covers all forms of human trafficking including sex trafficking and labor trafficking with a focus on the specific risks, indicators, and responsibilities that apply to licensed massage therapists. You will learn how to recognize potential victims, understand the tactics traffickers use, and know how and where to report concerns safely.

Recognizing the Signs
As a massage therapist, you may encounter individuals who are victims of trafficking. Common indicators include:
- Physical signs: unexplained injuries, signs of malnutrition, or poor hygiene
- Behavioral signs: anxiety, fearfulness, or submissiveness; reluctance to speak freely or answer questions independently
- Situational signs: working excessively long hours, having little or no time off, or appearing unable to leave their work environment
Taking Action
If you suspect someone is a victim of human trafficking:
- Do not confront the suspected trafficker doing so could endanger both you and the victim
- Contact authorities reach local law enforcement or the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 (also formatted as 1-888-37-37-888)
- Provide support discreetly offer the victim information about available resources and services in a way that does not put them at further risk
State and Jurisdiction Notices
Florida: All Florida-licensed massage therapists are required to complete 1 CE in Human Trafficking. This course is approved for Florida and will be reported to CE Broker on your behalf, provided your Florida license number is on file in your individual account before you complete the exam.
Michigan: We believe this course is valid for Michigan pursuant to Rule 338.732. It is your responsibility to confirm with your state board whether these hours will be accepted.
Texas: This course does not meet the mandated requirements for Texas. We are not a Texas-approved provider as of March 2026.
NCBTMB: Although Institute of Somatic Therapy is an NCBTMB Approved Provider (#280672-00), the NCBTMB does not recognize Human Trafficking as an accepted course topic. These hours will not count toward NCBTMB renewal.
New York: The New York Board of Massage does not recognize Human Trafficking as an accepted course topic. These hours will not count toward New York license renewal.
Anyone is welcome to take this course; however, by enrolling you acknowledge and agree that the credit earned may not be valid in all jurisdictions. It is your responsibility to confirm whether this course is accepted by your state board before enrolling.
