Prenatal Massage Specialist Certificate Program
This course is frequently sought by massage therapists looking for prenatal massage certification training approved for license renewal. The IST Prenatal Massage Specialist Advanced Certification/Certificate is a continuing education program designed to give you the clinical knowledge, practical techniques, and professional confidence to support clients throughout every stage of pregnancy. This is the course we have offered since 2017, formerly called "Certified Prenatal Massage Therapist," and hundreds of therapists have completed it. To receive the title of Prenatal Massage Specialist, Advanced Certificate, please read the disclosure below.
A Note on Credentialing Language
In 2022, the NCBTMB the national board that sets professional standards for the massage therapy profession retired its own use of the word "certification" for massage programs, and has since raised concerns about continuing education providers using that term broadly. A growing industry standard now holds that the words "certification" and "certified" should be reserved for credentials issued by independent organizations that administer formal examinations, require ongoing recertification, and maintain independent third-party oversight of their programs. This is the capacity of traditional institutional massage schools which we are not. Nor are there many continuing education providers who are.
Because no national accrediting body currently exists that certifies prenatal massage therapists or other maternal and women's health massage specialists, the Institute of Somatic Therapy is honoring this shift by moving toward updated credentialing language. We are now issuing Course Specific Specialist Certificates in place of the term "certification." Until the industry evolves further or establishes a recognized, independent body for these specialties, we will transition away from using that term.
Our credentials represent your advanced training, clinical proficiency, and demonstrated expertise in working with these specialized populations. It is a meaningful mark of your commitment and we stand fully behind its value. We recognize that many employers require a therapist to be "certified" to work with pregnant clients. We are sensitive to this and can help you navigate that requirement by providing a certificate that reflects the language your employer recognizes. As far as our marketing and course descriptions are concerned, we have had to shift away from using the terms "Certification in Prenatal Massage" or "Certified Prenatal Massage Therapist" exclusively. This is something practitioners across the country are navigating. Be patient with us as the industry standards evolve.
Why Learn Prenatal Massage?
As a pregnancy massage instructor with over 30 years of clinical experience, Dr. Deanine Picciano has witnessed firsthand how learning this specialized skill transforms not only the lives of expectant mothers but also the careers of massage therapists. Pregnancy massage is not just a therapeutic service it is a vital practice that offers physical, emotional, and mental benefits to mothers while opening meaningful career opportunities for therapists who choose to specialize.
As awareness of holistic health grows, more expectant mothers are seeking safe, natural ways to manage pregnancy-related discomfort. This rising demand makes prenatal massage one of the most valuable specializations available to massage therapists today.
Benefits of Prenatal Massage for Clients
- Relieves Back and Joint Pain: Back pain and joint discomfort are among the most common complaints during pregnancy. Prenatal massage eases muscle tension, improves flexibility, and reduces strain on the changing body.
- Reduces Swelling and Enhances Circulation: Targeted techniques help reduce edema in the feet, ankles, and hands while promoting healthy circulation benefiting both mother and baby by improving oxygen and nutrient flow.
- Promotes Relaxation and Emotional Well-Being: Massage helps lower stress hormones and boost endorphins, providing a calming experience that supports mental health throughout pregnancy.
Why Therapists Should Specialize in Prenatal Massage
- A Growing Niche: Demand for prenatal massage continues to rise. Specializing positions you as a go-to professional for prenatal care, building long-term client relationships that often extend into postpartum recovery.
- Differentiate Your Practice: Offering prenatal massage makes your practice more versatile and appealing whether you work in a spa, wellness clinic, birth center, or independently.
- A Rewarding Career Path: Supporting mothers through one of the most transformative periods of their lives creates lasting, meaningful impact for both the mother and her baby.
About the IST Prenatal Massage Specialist Certificate
The Prenatal Massage Specialist Certificate is an advanced credential awarded solely by the Institute of Somatic Therapy, under the authority of Dr. Deanine Picciano, AP, LMT, upon demonstrated proficiency in the subject matter. Earning this credential requires successful completion of all three courses in this program, written assessment, clinical case study submissions, SOAP documentation, and direct educational interaction.
This is not a generic course completion certificate. It represents a higher standard of engagement with the material and demonstrates your commitment to clinical excellence in prenatal care.
Neither the NCBTMB nor any state massage therapy board determines the awarding of this specialty credential. The Institute of Somatic Therapy is an NCBTMB Approved Provider (#280672-00); this designation reflects the quality approval of our continuing education courses, not the awarding of this specialty certificate. No independent credentialing body currently exists for prenatal massage as a specialty within the massage profession. This credential is issued by IST under our own established educational guidelines.
When your clients, employers, birth centers, or referral partners ask whether you are trained in prenatal massage this is your answer. You completed an advanced, nationally approved educational program and earned a specialty credential from one of the most clinically experienced maternal health educators in the country.
