Fertility Massage Specialist Certificate Program
This course is frequently sought by massage therapists looking for fertility massage certification training approved for license renewal. The IST Fertility Massage Specialist-Advanced Certification/Certificate is a continuing education program designed to give you the clinical knowledge, practical techniques, and professional confidence to support clients navigating the challenges of infertility.
This is the course we have offered since 2017 that was formerly called "Certified Fertility Massage Therapist" and have had hundreds of therapists complete.
To receive the title of Fertility Massage Specialist, Advanced Certificate, please read the disclosure below.
A Note on Credentialing Language
In 2022, the NCBTMB the national board that sets professional standards for the massage therapy profession retired its own use of the word "certification" for massage programs, and has since raised concerns about continuing education providers using that term broadly. A growing industry standard now holds that the word "certification" or "certified" should be reserved for credentials issued by independent organizations that administer formal examinations, require ongoing recertification, and maintain independent 3rd party oversight of their programs. This is the capacity of traditional institutional massage schools- of which we are not. Nor are there many continuing educations providers who are.
Because no national accrediting body currently exists that certifies prenatal massage therapists, fertility massage therapists, or other maternal or women's health massage specialists, the Institute of Somatic Therapy is honoring this shift by moving toward updated credentialing language. We are now issuing Course Specific Specialist Certificates in place of the term "certification." Until the industry evolves further or establishes a recognized independent body for these specialties, we will be transitioning away from using that term.
Our credential represents your advanced training, clinical proficiency, and demonstrated expertise in working with these specialized populations. It is a meaningful mark of your commitment and we stand fully behind its value.
We recognize that most employers require a therapist to be "certified" to work with specific populations, such as pregnancy and fertility. We are sensitive to this and can help you navigate this requirement by providing a certificate that reflects the language your employer recognizes. As far as our marketing and course description stands, we have had to shift away from using the terms "Certification in Fertility Massage" or "Certified Fertility Massage Therapist" solely.
This is something that practitioners across the country are navigating. Be patient with us as the industry standards evolve.

About the IST Fertility Massage Specialist Certificate
The Fertility Massage Specialist Certificate is an advanced credential awarded solely by the Institute of Somatic Therapy, under the authority of Dr. Deanine Picciano, AP, LMT, upon demonstrated proficiency in the subject matter. Earning this credential requires successful completion of coursework, written assessment, clinical case study submissions, SOAP documentation, and direct educational interaction.
This is not a generic course completion certificate. It represents a higher standard of engagement with the material and demonstrates your commitment to clinical excellence in this specialty area.
Neither the NCBTMB nor any state massage therapy board makes a determination on the awarding of this specialty credential. The Institute of Somatic Therapy is an NCBTMB Approved Provider (#280672-00); this designation reflects the quality approval of our continuing education courses, not the awarding of this specialty certificate. No independent credentialing body currently exists for fertility massage as a specialty within the massage profession. This credential is issued by IST under our own established educational guidelines.
When your clients, employers, or referral partners ask whether you are trained in fertility massage this is your answer. You completed an advanced, nationally approved educational program and earned a specialty credential from one of the most clinically focused maternal and reproductive health educators in the country.
Earning Your Fertility Massage Specialist Certificate Optional Advanced Track
Upon completion of the course and online exam, you may choose to pursue the optional Fertility Massage Specialist Certificate. To earn this credential, you will document two sessions on a client, teaching her how to perform self-fertility massage to support her goal of conception. We do not require that your volunteer client actually becomes pregnant.
The documentation process is a structured self-analysis of your practice sessions. You will answer reflective questions such as:
- Looking back at your session, what was the best part of the experience? How can you build on that in future sessions?
- What was the biggest challenge with this massage? What can you do to mitigate that challenge in the future?
- What questions did your client have? How can you implement that information into future work?
- Based on this experience, what are three things you can do better next time?
There is a one-time processing fee of $45 payable when you access the online application. There is no expiration date or required renewal for this credential.

The Science Behind Fertility Massage
Whether massage can help with infertility depends significantly on the underlying cause. The techniques taught in this course are most applicable for clients whose infertility involves fallopian blockages, adhesions, uterine positioning, or circulatory factors affecting the reproductive organs.
Two notable studies support the use of targeted manual therapy for fertility:
- A 2004 study published in Medscape General Medicine OB/GYN & Women's Health found that of 14 patients with suspected pelvic adhesions who received targeted abdominal bodywork, 71% became pregnant within one year.
- A 2008 study published in Alternative Therapies followed 28 infertile women with confirmed complete fallopian tube blockages. After 20 hours of manual physical therapy, 61% showed blockage release, and nine of those women went on to become pregnant.
- A 2015 study in Alternative Therapies a ten-year retrospective of nearly 1,400 infertility patients found that over half of those with blocked fallopian tubes experienced clearing of blockages, with over half of those going on to become pregnant. Of patients with endometriosis, over 40% became pregnant, as did over 50% of women with PCOS.
Important ethical note: There are more causes of infertility that massage cannot address than those it can. As a fertility massage specialist, you are ethically obligated to be transparent with clients about the limitations of this therapy, to ask about their diagnosis, and to avoid implying that massage will resolve infertility in situations where that is not realistic. Because infertile clients are often in an emotionally fragile state, clinical honesty is both a professional and an ethical imperative and is covered thoroughly in this course.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can massage help infertility?
It depends on the cause. The techniques in this course are most effective for clients whose infertility involves fallopian blockages, uterine positioning issues, or circulatory factors. Many causes of infertility cannot be addressed through massage, and this course will train you to make that clinical distinction clearly and ethically.
What techniques are taught in this course?
Students study deep tissue massage, myofascial release, reflexology, aromatherapy, and targeted abdominal and pelvic work all directed toward the reproductive organs. The material is designed from a self-massage perspective and includes instruction on teaching clients to perform techniques on themselves.
Is fertility massage ethical?
Yes, when practiced within clearly communicated limitations. This course addresses both the evidence supporting fertility massage and the arguments against it. You will be trained to market this service responsibly and to counsel clients with compassion and clinical honesty.
What if I fail the test?
You may retest as many times as needed at no additional charge. Test questions vary with each attempt.
Will the course work on my phone or tablet?
Yes. We invite you to take our free sample course to personally verify compatibility with your device before enrolling.
Do you offer payment plans?
We accept all major credit cards. We do not offer private financing; however, you may make payments to your credit card company as fits your budget.
What is the difference between cognitive and kinesthetic courses?
Cognitive courses teach concepts related to massage therapy such as anatomy, pathology, ethics, and research without teaching specific hands-on techniques. Kinesthetic courses teach hands-on techniques used directly with clients. This course is classified as kinesthetic. Some states restrict the number of kinesthetic hours that can be completed online. Please refer to our State Guidelines page for your state's specific rules.
Student Feedback
"The content was so condensed, I had to review it quite a few times prior to testing. For someone who has a bachelor's degree in philosophy and a focus in nursing, I've had my fair share of reviewing anatomy and physiology on four separate occasions. This course was great thorough and applicable. The course gave a whole lot more content than the CEs offered, and I will definitely have to go back and review all of the content a few more times."
