If you've ever searched "how many CEU hours do I need to renew my massage license" and ended up more confused than when you started, you're not alone. Massage CEU requirements by state vary widely and they change more often than most therapists realize. Here's what you need to know before your next renewal.
There's no single national standard. Each state sets its own rules for total hours, renewal frequency, and which types of courses count. A few benchmarks worth knowing:
NCBTMB requires 24 hours every two years for Board Certification renewal. Of those, 3 hours must be in ethics that's the only mandatory category. No more than 4 hours may be in self-care.
AMTA requires 48 hours every four years for Professional Active members. AMTA doesn't approve courses independently it accepts NCBTMB-approved courses, which means any IST course qualifies.
Beyond those frameworks, your state board sets its own requirements and that's where it gets specific.
State boards update CEU requirements more often than most therapists expect. Since COVID, many states that temporarily allowed all home-study hours have rolled those policies back. Meanwhile, new mandatory categories are being added across the country. Three worth knowing:
Human Trafficking awareness. Florida, Nevada, and Michigan already require this as part of license renewal. More states are moving in this direction. Make sure any Human Trafficking course you take is on your specific state's approved provider list NCBTMB approval alone may not satisfy a state-specific mandate.
Diversity and Cultural Competency. Michigan now requires 1 hour of Implicit Bias Training per renewal cycle. Maryland requires 1 hour of Diversity or Cultural Competency. This category is expanding expect more states to follow. IST's Diversity and Cultural Awareness course meets this requirement for both Michigan and Maryland.
Ethics hours. Most states require a set number of ethics CEU hours per cycle these are a separate category, not interchangeable with clinical technique hours.
Before you start shopping for courses, go directly to your state board and confirm your current requirements. Assume nothing has stayed the same since your last renewal.
Not all online CEU courses are recognized equally. The most important thing to verify is approval status. IST courses are approved by NCBTMB (provider #280672-00) and CE Broker (provider #50-1116) meaning they're accepted for license renewal in all 50 U.S. states and Canada, with automatic CE Broker reporting in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, New Hampshire, and Tennessee.
